A research community at UCLA for the safety of advanced AI
We believe AI will be the most transformative technology of our lifetime, and want to ensure its development and diffusion goes well for everyone.

Why AI safety?
AI systems are improving faster than our ability to understand them, and we are very quickly approaching a world where these capabilities pose an existential threat to the continued wellbeing of humanity. These models are already aiding in cybercrime, the design of bioweapons, and mass surveillance. Frontier labs have consistently demonstrated an inability to keep their most powerful systems in check while racing towards recursive self improvement. All the while, the United States and China are fighting for AI supremacy.
The world needs more people working in AI safety, whether as technical researchers, policymakers, field-builders, or forecasters.
What we offer
Technical AIS Research Fellowship
Learn about the science of misalignment and the practical techniques safety researchers use. Fellows will work through part of the ARENA curriculum and develop a scoped research project over the course of the quarter.
→AI Governance & Strategy Fellowship
For those interested in AI macrostrategy. We cover the current trends in AI and how they’re shaping the AIS policy landscape both in the United States and abroad.
→Paper Reading Group
Our weekly technical reading group where we go over the latest ML and AIS research.
→Compute for Research
Get access to the largest GPU cluster of any club at UCLA to run experiments.
→Networking Opportunities
Members can build their network and meet professionals working full time in AI safety through guest speaker events, socials, and retreats.
